Any injection may result in soreness, redness, itching, swelling or burning at the injection site for one to two days. Sometimes a small, hard lump may persist for some weeks or more. This is no cause for concern. If any adverse events following vaccination are severe and persistent, or if you are worried, please contact the clinic.
DTP/Td Vaccination (Infanrix/Boostrix/ADT)
Adverse Effect: Usually mild and transient; gone within 24 hours. Localised pain, redness, and swelling at the injection site. Low grade temperature (fever). Feeling irritable, unsettled and generally unhappy may persist for 24-48 hours. Drowsiness.
Treatment: Give extra fluids to drink. Do not overdress the baby if hot. Give paracetamol/ibuprofen to lower fever if needed.
Hepatitis A & B Vaccination (Twinrix/Engerix/ Havrix)
Adverse Effect: Very occasionally soreness, redness at injection site. Low grade temperature (fever).
Treatment: Give extra fluids to drink. Do not overdress the baby if hot. Give paracetamol/ibuprofen for pain, fever if needed.
Hib Vaccination (Hiberix)
Adverse Effect: Usually mild and transient. Mild temperature (fever). Localised pain, redness and swelling at the injection site.
Treatment: Give extra fluids to drink. Do not overdress the baby if hot. Give paracetamol/ibuprofen to lower fever if needed.
HPV Vaccination (Gardasil/Cervarix)
Adverse Effect: Fever, abnormal redness of skin. Pain over injection site.
Treatment: Give extra fluids to drink. Give paracetamol/ibuprofen to lower fever if needed.
Influenza Vaccination (Fluarix/Fluvax/Aggripal/ Vaxigrip/Fluarix Tetra/Fluquadri)
Adverse Effect: Usually mild and transient. Low grade temperature
(fever). Occasional discomfort, redness, swelling at the injection site.
Treatment: Give paracetamol/ibuprofen to lower fever if needed.
Meningococcal Gp C Vaccination (Neisvac-C)
Adverse Effect: Pain over injection site. Fever. Increased crying, irritability. Decreased appetite, vomiting.
Treatment: Give extra fluids to drink, Give paracetamol/ibuprofen to lower fever if needed.
MMR & Chickenpox Vaccination (Priorix/Varilrix/ Priorix-Tetra)
Adverse Effect: Fever 4-12 days post vaccination, Rash (non- infectious). Lethargy, fatigue, irritability. Pain over injection site.
Treatment: General weakness. Give fluids to drink. Do not overdress the baby if hot. Give paracetamol/ibuprofen to lower fever if needed.
Polio Vaccination (Imovax Polio)
Adverse Effect: Very rarely any adverse event. Occasionally pain at the injection site.
Treatment: No treatment usually needed. Give paracetamol/
ibuprofen for pain if needed.
Pneumococcal Vaccination (Prevenar)
Adverse Effect: Mild pain. Warmth and swelling at the injection site. Fever, irritability, drowsiness. Gastrointestinal upset within 24 hours.
Treatment: Give extra fluids to drink. Give paracetamol/ibuprofen to lower fever if needed.
Rabies Vaccination (Rabipur)
Adverse Effect: Localised pain, redness, swelling at injection site. Fever, faintness, headache, nausea.
Treatment: Give paracetamol/ibuprofen to lower fever if needed. Rest.
Japanese Encephalitis Vaccination (Imojev)
Adverse Effect: Localised pain, redness, itching, vomiting, loss of appetite, tiredness, myalgia, low grade temperature (fever).
Treatment: Give extra fluids to drink. Give paracetamol/ibuprofen to lower fever if needed.
Japanese Encephalitis Vaccination (Ixiaro)
Adverse Effect: Localised pain, redness, tenderness and swelling at injection site.
Treatment: Give extra fluids to drink. Give paracetamol/ibuprofen for pain if needed.
Meningitis Vaccination (Menactra/Mecevax /Nimenrix)
Pneumococcal Vaccinations (Pneumo 23)
Adverse Effect: Irritability, fever, fatigue. Loss of appetite, vomiting, regurgitation of food. Abdominal pain, flatulence, diarrhoea.
Treatment: Give extra fluids to drink.
Rotavirus Vaccination (Rotarix/Rotateq)
Adverse Effect: Localised pain, redness, swelling at injection site. Headache, fatigue, fever.
Treatment: Give extra fluids to drink. Give paracetamol/ibuprofen to lower fever if needed/rest.
Meningococcal Gp B Vaccination (Bexsero)
Adverse Effect: Pain over injection site. Fever. Increased crying, irritability. Diarrhoea, vomiting.
Treatment: Give extra fluids to drink, Give paracetamol/ibuprofen to lower fever if needed.
Shingles (Zostavax)
Adverse Effect: Headache, erythema, pain at injection site, swelling.
Treatment: Give extra fluids to drink. Give paracetamol/ibuprofen to lower fever if needed.
Typhoid Vaccination (Typherix/Typhim)
Adverse Effect: Usually mild and transient. Localised pain, redness and swelling at injection site, low grade temperature (fever).
Treatment: Give paracetamol/ibuprofen if needed.
Oral Typhoid Vaccination (Vivotif)
Adverse Effect: Abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, low grade temperature (fever) influenza like illness, headache, rash.
Treatment: Give paracetamol/ibuprofen if needed.
Yellow Fever Vaccination (Stamaril)
Adverse Effect: Headache. Rash. Fever 3-9 days post vaccination.
Treatment: Remain in the clinic for observation for 30 minutes. Give extra fluids to drink. Seek prompt treatment for any allergic reaction.
Cholera/Traveller’s Diarrhoea (Dukoral)
Adverse Effect: Diarrhoea, stomach pain, gurgling & bloating stomach, stomach gas, headaches.
Treatment: Remain fasted (avoid food, sips of water is allowed) for 1 hour after administration. Give extra fluids to drink.
